The ancient city of Underground , found in Turkey, is about 4000 years old
Around 1962, a farmer in the Derinku area of Turkey discovered a strange room while repairing his ground floor. When the contractors demolished a wall in his basement, they found a new room and several exits from that room. The farmer found an 85-meter-deep, 11-storey underground housing system with several rooms that could accommodate 20,000 people at a time. In addition, there were churches, wineries and even small farms.Due to its greatness, it became one of the most important discoveries in an underground city in Turkey.
The Turkish government claims that the city is about 2,700 years old, but most scholars estimate that it is about 4,000 years old. According to popular archeological beliefs, the city was built by the Hittites or the ancient Phrygians. However, the initial size of the city is believed to be much smaller than it is todayThe city is said to have prospered long after the disappearance of the Hittites and Phrygians from Anatolia. Artefacts from the Byzantine city are often found here. During the Byzantine-Arab wars between the 8th and 11th centuries, the underground city expanded to accommodate fleeing Orthodox Christians. Since then, the city has served as a safe haven for Byzantine Christians, and there are numerous churches in the city. When the Timor region of Mongolia was invaded around the 14th century, the city continued to grow and residents had to stay underground. When the Byzantine emperor was defeated by the Ottoman emperor, local Greek Christians sought refuge in the city in search of a safe place to practice their faith. This lasted from the 15th century to the early 20th century. When Greece and Turkey agreed to expel the relevant Turkish and Greek populations in 1923, the Greeks living in the underground city were also sent to Greece. The city was then abandoned and soon forgotten by all. It then resurfaces with the farmer finding a room downstairs. The city had a complex ventilation system that allowed humans and animals to breathe underground. It also has an attractive security system to prevent invaders. The city is completely fortified by the strong stone slab that blocks the entrances. The corridors connecting the rooms can be blocked with stones to encroach on the invaders and the roads leading to the rooms with double entrances mislead the invaders. With the rediscovery of the city, attempts have been made to uncover the true size of the city. However, 60 years after the rediscovery, scholars estimate that only a quarter of the city has been discovered. The area of central Anatolia is rich in underground settlements, and the city of Derinku was found to be connected with many underground cities in the region. Every year more and more new discoveries are made about the city and we can only hope that soon we will discover the full extent of its grandeur soon.
