So a large number of oil tanker accidents have taken place in the region very close to the coast
One reason for the proliferation of environmental disasters. In July 1979, 287,000 metric tons of crude oil fell into the sea near the island of Tobago in the Caribbean as a result of two ships colliding.
The two ships that collided due to a hurricane were the Atlantic Empress and the Aegean Captain.Subsequent investigations revealed that the oil leak from the Atlantic Empress ship had started during the storm before it collided with the other ship.
The Atlantic Empress, which was able to control the fire on Captain Egan's ship, exploded after being towed 300 nautical miles off the coast. On August 3, the ship sank. Twenty-six crew members were also killed in the accident.
This is the fifth largest oil tanker accident in the world and the fifth largest oil spill in history.
The remarkable thing that happened here was that despite such a large amount of oil being dumped into the sea, the environmental damage caused by this was minimal due to the proper management of the Coast Guard teams.Last year's worst oil tanker accident occurred on July 25 off the coast of the Indian Ocean off the island of Mauritius. The Japanese MV Wakashi or super oil tanker collided with a coral reef.
More than a thousand tons of crude oil was dumped into the sea, but the remaining 3,000 tons could be safely removed because the ship did not catch fire.
