The World’s 5 Largest Military Vehicles
Conflict frequently pushes countries to the brink of invention, as militaries seek to outsmart and outmaneuver their adversaries. As a result, during the last 100 years, several really remarkable military vehicles have been developed, pushing the boundaries of engineering and mechanical to lengths, weights, and capacities previously unimaginable. Here are five of the world's largest military vehicles.
Typhoon Submarine
Russia is a country in Europe.
The Typhoon-class submarines are the world's biggest military submarines, measuring 515 feet in length. Each of the six Typhoon submarines developed had a payload of 20 ballistic nuclear missiles and could stay underwater for up to three months. They required a staff of 160 sailors to operate. The Typhoon was very stealthy for a vehicle of its size, due to a five-layer shell of sound-dampening plates. The Typhoon submarines were initially deployed in 1980, however due to high maintenance costs, Russia halted its Typhoon upgrade program in 2012.
USS Enterprise Aircraft Carrier
Country: U.S.A.
The USS Enterprise was the sixth US Naval warship to bear the name, with a crew of 4,600 military personnel. The world's first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, "Big E," was launched in 1960 and shared the same moniker as her WWII predecessor.Enterprise was the world's longest naval vessel and the 12th-heaviest supercarrier, with a length of 1,123 feet. She was supposed to be the first of six similar aircraft carriers, but building expenses were so exorbitant that the other five were scrapped. She was decommissioned in 2013 after 51 years of service.
Schwerer Gustav Gun
Country: Germany
A German 80 centimeter railway cannon known as "Heavy Gustaf" or "Great Gustaf" was the largest gun ever constructed. It was designed as siege artillery in the late 1930s by German industrial giant Krupp with the particular goal of demolishing the main forts of the French Maginot Line, the most powerful fortifications at the time, during WWII.The cannon weighed over 1,350 tons, requiring a 500-man crew to maintain and operate, and could fire at targets as far away as 29 miles. The Gustav cannon was the biggest mobile artillery piece ever created in terms of total weight, and it fired the heaviest rounds of any artillery piece.
Char 2C Tank
Country: France
The Char 2C, also known as the FCM 2C, was a French super-heavy tank that was designed during WWI but did not see service until after the war. It was the largest operating tank ever built in terms of physical size. The 69-ton, 40-foot truck was operated by 12 men in two compartments. It had a 75mm cannon in the world's first three-man turret, a rear machine gun turret, and three 8 mm machine gun stations in the front. All ten Char 2cs were mobilized and assigned to their own unit, the 51st Bataillon de Chars de Combat, during the French mobilization of 1939. Surprisingly, the super-heavy tanks were largely employed for propaganda and morale-boosting, with scenes of them ascending and smashing ancient French forts frequently appearing in movies.
Mil MI-26 Helicopter
Country: U.S.S.R.
The MI-26 is the world's largest and most powerful transport helicopter, having been the first to use an eight-blade main rotor. Its unrivaled lifting capacity allows it to transport huge cargos weighing up to 20 tons, and it was first flown in 1977.There have been 320 Mil Mi-26 helicopters manufactured, and they are still in service with military and civilian operators. It has the world record for the largest bulk hoisted to 2,000 meters and can transport up to 90 passengers (it lifted 56,768.8 kg in 1982)
